Tell us about growing up and your life before being a realtor.
I grew up in Burlington, North Carolina and lived there until shortly after I graduated college. As a kid, I spent almost all of my time playing sports. I played football, basketball and baseball all the way through high school. I was then fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play college baseball and attended Elon University on a baseball scholarship. Elon was a pretty easy choice for me as they were a Division I program that played some of the top college baseball teams in the country and it was also just a 10 minute drive from my parent’s house. I had the chance to play on some really good teams and met many lifelong friends during my time at Elon. My senior year of 2006 we were Southern Conference champions, played in the Clemson, SC regional and finished the season ranked #24 in the country. I graduated from Elon in 2006 with a degree in Leisure & Sports Management and could not be more thankful for the years I spent at Elon.
Now to answer the question that almost everyone asks me when I meet them for the first time, “How did you end up moving to Mankato from North Carolina?” Playing college baseball is pretty much a year-round commitment, so once the college season is over, most players will then go play in one of the collegiate summer leagues somewhere across the country. After my junior season in 2005, our assistant coach at Elon was hired to be the head coach of the Mankato Moondogs for that upcoming summer, so I decided to join him. About a month into the summer, I ended up meeting this extremely beautiful girl named Katie and the rest is history. We hung out for the rest of that summer and stayed together while I finished my senior year of college at Elon. Shortly after graduation in the summer of 2006, I flew up to Mankato to visit Katie and have lived here ever since.
Fast forwarding to the present, Katie and I have been married for 10+ years and have 3 beautiful sons (Leo 7, Logan 6 and Levi 1). There is never a dull moment around our house as the boys are always doing something active. Leo & Logan play sports year-round (hockey in the winter, baseball in the spring and football in the fall). Levi started walking about a month ago and is constantly on the move trying to keep up with his big brothers. I coach both Leo & Logan’s baseball teams and also help coach their football team. My Dad always coached my teams growing up, so I always knew that when my boys were old enough, I absolutely wanted to coach them. As for hockey, I am just a parent and spectator during this season. This is mainly due to the fact that I can’t ice skate and grew up in North Carolina where youth hockey was non-existent. I could not be more blessed to be Dad to these 3 wonderful boys and love them more than anything in this world!
Being a Realtor
“With my knowledge as a Certified Residential Appraiser, I want to make sure my clients are making the best decision possible when buying or selling a home.”
1. How did you begin your career in real estate?
I began my career in the real estate industry back in 2007 when I got my real estate appraiser license. I really enjoyed doing appraisals because every day was something different and I really learned a lot about all aspects of a house, market trends, how to determine the value of a home, etc. After doing appraisals for about 7 years, I was getting a little bit burnt out and knew that I was ready for a change. My wife Katie had been selling real estate for a few years at this point and started to become more busy as time went on. It got to a point where Katie felt like work was taking too much time away from our family and she did not want that. In April 2014, I decided to get my license to sell real estate so that I would be able to help Katie when she got too busy. I continued doing appraisals during this time, but just did not accept as many orders. It wasn’t too long after this I decided to stop doing appraisals all together and become a full-time realtor, working as a team with Katie. I could not be happier with my decision and really enjoy all aspects of selling real estate.
2. What do you feel are the advantages of working with your wife Katie as a real estate team?
Working together as a team with Katie has been great and we absolutely love it! We feel that our clients are getting the service of 2 agents for the price of 1 when they choose to work with us. We have the ability to offer them the best service possible because one of us is always available to assist our clients with anything they may need. In real estate, a lot of time is spent working on nights and weekends, so being a team, we have the luxury of always being able to give our clients great service and it allows us to spend more time with our 3 boys.
3. What is your favorite thing about being a realtor?
I really enjoy getting the opportunity to meet and work with new people. When working with clients to sell their home or helping them with buying a new one, I know that it is a very big deal and is something I do not take lightly. I love knowing that my clients are happy once the process is complete and want them to contact me in the future with any of their real estate needs. I have had the opportunity to work with so many great people during my time in the real estate industry and look forward to meeting and working with many more new people in the future.
